Teton County Sheriff Matt Carr and Stefani Wells met to talk about their earliest political experiences and how, as parents, they can influence their children. Carr is running for his third term. Wells is the director of advancement and enrollment at the Jackson Hole Community School.
Both Carr and Wells have lived in the valley for over 25 years. Carr moved to Jackson in the early 1990s to work as a ski instructor and fishing guide. Wells moved to the region in 2000, also to ski.
In this conversation, Carr and Wells discuss their perspectives on politics and faith and how the homes in which they were raised influence them today. Carr grew up in a family that encouraged his attendance at Greenpeace protests. Wells grew up in an evangelical Christian family. Wells specifically reflects on a recent visit to the orphanage in South Korea from which she was adopted and how the commitment of one of the nuns inspired her. Despite growing up in different environments, they now share similar outlooks.
This conversation was recorded for KHOL’s One Small Step Program that brings people with different beliefs into the recording studio to talk and discover their common ground. For election season, KHOL paired candidates running for local office with the constituents they aim to represent. These conversations cover the who and the why behind our political and religious beliefs and, in just an hour, seek to find some common ground.
