Resort-goers will have fewer parking spaces at the Stilson lot this ski season

The popular bus stop and carpool meet-up to get to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort will hold about 40% fewer cars this winter.

Skiers carpooling to Teton Pass’ backcountry routes or busing toward Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s slopes can expect fewer parking spaces at the Stilson Lot this winter.

The typical 850-space gravel lot will have about 500 this winter, some paved.

“It might be a tiny bit confusing the first time people go out there to park for ski season,” Overholser said, “I think they’ll figure it out pretty quickly.”

Heather Overholser, Teton County Director of Public Works, said the lot often didn’t reach capacity during previous ski seasons, except for “powder days” and holiday weekends.

She said the county, JHMR and the Teton Village Association, which manages parking at the resort, are coming up with alternatives to maximize space and efficiency during those large visitation days. Overholser said those options have not been decided.

“It’s a construction project,” Overholser said, “there will be some inconveniences and drawbacks.”

Bus pick-up and drop-off locations will remain in the same spot, outside the current transit center. Routes are not expected to be affected.

The change comes as construction, which began in April, continues on the new $14 million Stilson Transit Center. It is expected to provide bus bays, bike storage, climate-controlled waiting areas and electric vehicle charging stations. It’s one of 13 projects funded by a $25 million federal BUILD grant.

“This is the signature project of the BUILD Grant,” Overholser said, “and it’s been many, many years in the making.”

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort transferred about 5 acres to the county for the transit center. Construction is on track and expected to be complete next summer.
