One Small Step

One Small Step brings community members with different beliefs and backgrounds to talk and discover common ground. The goal is to help mend division in our country and in our community. One Small Step was created by StoryCorps, the national nonprofit dedicated to recording, preserving, and sharing the stories of Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs. In 2023 KHOL was one of five public radio stations to participate in this initiative. And in 2024 we revived the program for election season – pairing candidates running for local office with the constituents they aimed to represent.

“You’re a person I feel honored to have in my state, to be a fellow citizen with me.”

Conversations are archived at the Library of Congress and on the StoryCorps website

Strategic partners for KHOL’s One Small Step initiative encompassed a diverse set of ideologies and beliefs: The Teton County GOP and the Teton County Democratic Party, St. John’s Episcopal Church, The Jackson Hole Jewish Community, and Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church. The Teton County Library generously allowed us to use their new Wonder Institute Recording Studio for conversations

If you would like to learn how to document and preserve One Small Step local stories you can start and record your own conversation with a friend, relative, colleague, or someone else you know using StoryCorps technology. Take the One Small Step: DIY participant course here. This will guide you through the process, step by step!

You can join the One Small Step community by participating in discussions and upcoming events through the One Small Step Facebook group. Joining the One Small Step email list is also a source for information on an ongoing basis about the initiative, related resources and articles, and a way to experience the stories of people who’ve had a conversation.

About StoryCorps

Founded in 2003, StoryCorps has given over 625,000 people, in all 50 states, the chance to record interviews about their lives. The award-winning organization preserves the recordings in its archive at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, the largest single collection of human voices ever gathered, and shares select stories with the public through StoryCorps’ podcast, NPR broadcasts, animated shorts, digital platforms, and best-selling books. These powerful human stories reflect the vast range of American experiences, engender empathy and connection, and remind us how much more we have in common than what divides us. StoryCorps is especially committed to capturing and amplifying voices least heard in the media. The StoryCorps MobileBooth, an Airstream trailer that has been transformed into a traveling recording booth, crisscrosses the country year-round gathering the stories of people nationwide. 2023 marks StoryCorps’ 20th anniversary.
