Compassion has long guided Dr. David Shlim’s medical career. In fact, he is the co-author of a book focusing on just that. Shlim wrote Medicine and Compassion with Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche, a Tibetan Buddhist lama. The book offers guidance on what it means to provide empathetic care. And it’s not just for medical providers. Teachers, parents of children with special needs, and those of us caring for elderly parents can all derive meaning from Medicine and Compassion.

Shlim, former chairman of the Teton District Board of Health, is also an expert in travel medicine. He has been at the forefront of research on illnesses from typhoid fever and hepatitis to rabies.

Given the good doctor’s expertise researching illness and Shlim’s focus on compassionate care, KHOL brought him into the studio to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic. His is a positive, empathetic voice that cuts through some of the uncertainty many of us are feeling right now.
