Resort Map Painter James Niehues on Art and Retirement

Who is the artist whose work you’ve seen the most? If you’re a skier or a snowboarder, there’s a good chance it might be James Niehues. Over the last 30 plus years, he’s painted more than 300 resort trail maps—including Telluride and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

Matt Hoisch of KOTO in Telluride spoke to the artist about his career after his recent announcement that he’s retiring from trail map making.
