The home stretch. The last mile. The final countdown. Something about the final mile of a long run is magic. Somewhere in me I dig deep and find enough energy to not completely hate that last mile. Mile 18 of a marathon is — historically — miserable. But mile 26? I can feel the finish line close and it is a glorious mile of running. This is where we are in the 2024 Old Bill’s fundraising campaign for KHOL. We’re in the last stretch. Please consider giving to KHOL to keep this amazing free resource free!
If you need some motivation in that final stretch of whatever you’re running in this race called life, KHOL has you covered. In our final installation of Old Bill’s Spotify Playlists, we have two KHOL DJs who are passionate about the art of the music mix.
Eli Bernstein’s Running Playlist
Eli is the friend you had growing up who always knew the newest music before anyone else. He would come over with a mix tape or a burned CD that you just HAD to listen to. As an avid runner, Eli was more than down to make a mix for KHOL listeners. From Eli: “This playlist is full of punk and emo proselytizing, on behalf of two genres that don’t have large footprints in Jackson. It’s high-tempo from first to last and spans subgenres, decades, and hopefully the duration of a great run.”
KHOL Show: Left of the Dial, on air Wednesdays, 5 – 7p.m.
Hometown: New Rochelle, NY
Favorite Artist: The Hold Steady
Favorite Run in the Valley: Putt Putt to Hagen Loop
Why do you run? To avoid restless legs when I go to sleep.
Why do you DJ? To spare my neighbors from having to listen to my music through the walls. On-air only!
Rachel Cohn’s Running Playlist
No tea no shade to any of the other playlists, but I’ve listened to Rachel Cohn’s Running Playlist probably three times more than any of the other ones. I even listened to it while I ran Old Bill’s! It’s so good! From Rachel: “Radio folks ‘got the goods’ as my mom would say it, and I think DJing has offered a space to feel connected to the community when at times life gets very isolating. Glad to have found this common thread with people in Jackson.”
KHOL Show: Absent Auxer, on Thursdays, 9:30 – 11p.m.
Hometown: Birmingham, AL
Favorite Artist: Ahhhh impossible, but okay I’ll go with Bob Dylan
Favorite Run in the Valley: Game Creek
Why do you run? I run to slow my thoughts down and feel strong, helps with my sleep a ton too.
Why do you DJ? I DJ to feel connected to my family, my grandfather was a FM pioneer in the South and I grew up in a household buzzing with local and public radio.
Check out all of KHOL’s Spotify playlists and please remember us as you get those last-minute Old Bill’s donations in before Friday, September 13 at 5p.m. MT.
