Jack Catlin, a.k.a. KnewJack, started DJing when DJs still lugged around crates of records. Entry into that world hinged on two turntables, a mixer and a lot of patience and practice. Because unlike the digital programs of today, records don’t match beats on their own. Catlin is among KHOL’s roster of DJs who spends hours preparing for his Saturday evening show, “The Heavy Warmup.” Tuning in is an immersive experience. It takes listeners on a journey from jazz and funk to hip-hop and house. And it means you’ll probably be busy scribbling down the names of artists you’ve never heard before, or music once in your periphery.

A longtime DJ in Los Angeles, Catlin makes his Jackson DJing debut at The Rose tonight from 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. Ahead of that set, we asked Catlin what drew him to DJing.
