In what plaintiffs hailed as a “landmark victory for climate, health and public lands,” a federal judge halted oil and gas drilling on nearly 500 square miles of public lands in Wyoming. Those land parcels are leased by the Bureau of Land Management to oil and gas companies.
During a ruling on Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge Rudolph Contreras concluded that the Bureau of Land Management “did not adequately quantify the climate change impacts of oil and gas leasing.” He said that BLM’s failure to do so violates federal environmental laws.
